Driving Rules in Iran:

There are no weird and unexpected driving rules in Iran really.  (except that women should wear Hijab and can;’t driving motorcycles)

I will mention some general facts that you should be aware of.

first of all, all roads in Iran have a speed limit.

the speed limit within the city is about 50 km/h to 80 km/h. as for the highways, the speed limit goes up to 120 km/h.

and you should know, speed cameras are set up almost everywhere so that people stick to the limit.

there are also speed bumps set up in the roads to force drivers to slow down, and also wake them, in case they are drowsy!

Cars in Iran drive on the right side of the road, and they are supposed to overtake from the left.

Well, if it’s your first time driving in Iran, I know what you see out the window.

You get of the airplane, you take a cab or rent a car, and then, you are on the roads of chaos.

from what it seems, there are no driving rules and everybody is driving in their own imaginary lane.

yeah.

but you know, there is an invisible order in the midst of the chaos, people know what they are doing.

everybody is actually following the driving rules.

they are not driving dangerously at all, they are just driving a little bit out of the order to the eyes of a foreigner.

and well, it has gotten a lot better, people don’t drive as recklessly as before and they do their best to stay in lanes. they really try!

  • You must be over 18 years of age and have a valid International driving permit, driver license issued by the country of residence, the third-party insurance valid within Iran, and validation for the vehicle to pass through Iran (Carnet de Passage).
  • I suggest that you avoid driving off-road near the borders.
  • If you are in an accident, you must leave the scene and wait until the police arrive to file a report.

What is Carnet de passage?

it is simply your car’s passport!it is a declaration that allows you to enter a country with your car without paying import taxes.

but you are required to pay a deposit.

How much is the deposit for Carnet de Passage for Iran?

to calculate any country’s Deposit, you only need to know the price of your car and the band number of the country you wish to enter.

then multiply the numbers.

for example, Iran’s band number is 5.

so the deposit will be: 5*( the price of your car)
